NMSU passed one test by holding off Tulsa, but now comes a mirror matchup against Louisiana Tech. The Bulldogs bring a strong defense and a limited offense, which feels familiar because that is exactly who the Aggies have been through two weeks. Both teams can make stops. Both teams struggle to put points together. The difference will be which offense can create enough balance to survive.
For the Aggies the question still sits up front. The offensive line has not shown improvement in the run game or in protection. NMSU is averaging just 2.0 yards per carry through two games, a number that is not good enough to win consistently in Conference USA. Against Tulsa the Aggies moved the ball in the second half by going to quick game concepts. Short passes, slants, and check downs protected Logan Fife from pressure. That worked once, but Louisiana Tech will be ready for it. The Bulldogs know NMSU wants to live off quick throws, and they will adjust.
So the big question remains. Can the offensive line finally find rhythm? Sometimes it takes three or four games for a unit to gel, but confidence is hard to build when the production is this low. If they were improving week to week you could point to growth, but the numbers stayed flat against Tulsa. The bye week is looming, and maybe New Mexico is when you start to see it click, but it feels hard to expect it against Louisiana Tech.
The defense continues to be the strength. The front seven applied pressure and held the run in check. The secondary looked better against Tulsa and played with more discipline. This group is doing its job, but you cannot expect them to win games alone every week. At some point the offense must match the defense’s effort.
NMSU is 2-0 for the first time since 2014. They have not gone 3-0 since 1999. That is the opportunity in front of them on Saturday. If the Aggies can find a way to keep Fife upright and finally get some traction on the ground, then this could be the game that signals they are more than just a team leaning on defense. If not, then the ceiling will stay limited no matter how strong the defense plays.
