In their season opener, the UTEP Miners faced a tough challenge on the road, falling to Nebraska 40-7. The game began with a strong showing from Nebraska, led by their freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola. Raiola orchestrated an impressive opening drive, capping it off with a touchdown that gave the Cornhuskers an early 7-0 lead.
UTEP responded with a glimpse of promise under first-year head coach Scotty Walden’s fast-paced offensive scheme. On a quick three-play drive, quarterback Skyler Locklear connected with Kam Thomas on a 38-yard touchdown pass, tying the game at 7 as the first quarter came to a close. The Miners’ offense briefly showed the tempo and explosiveness that Walden aims to instill, giving fans hope for the future.
However, the momentum quickly swung back in Nebraska’s favor. The Cornhuskers dominated the second quarter, scoring 23 unanswered points before halftime, exploiting UTEP’s overmatched offensive and defensive lines. The Miners’ secondary, which showed flashes of potential, struggled to keep up as the game wore on, allowing Nebraska to build a commanding 30-7 lead at the half.
The second half saw Nebraska continue their dominance, outscoring UTEP 10-0 to seal the 40-7 victory. The Miners’ offense, stifled by Nebraska’s defensive front, couldn’t find a rhythm, and their defense was unable to slow down the Cornhuskers’ balanced attack.
Coach Walden gave both of his quarterbacks, who battled for the starting job throughout the spring and summer, an opportunity to play. Locklear finished the game 11 of 17 for 115 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Cade McConnell, who also saw time under center, completed 3 of 7 passes for 20 yards but threw a costly interception.
As the Miners look ahead, they’ll prepare for Scotty Walden’s home debut at the Sun Bowl against Southern Utah, a team coming off a blowout loss to Big 12 powerhouse Utah. UTEP fans will be eager to see how the Miners adjust and improve in their home opener.
