Franklin Gets Past Coronado 14-13

In the annual Westside Bowl, Franklin outdueled Coronado in what turned out to be a defensive ball game, 14 – 13. Both fan bases were into every snap with roars of cheers during team highs which made the atmosphere resemble scenes of Friday Night Lights.

Coronado’s Defense would land the first blow in this heavyweight bout; they picked off Franklin’s quarterback Shay Smith, which led to the T-birds marching down the field and into paydirt. Despite Coronado’s quick six, a blocked extra point by the Cougar special teams proved to be a pivotal moment early in the game.

The two 6A squads would exchange scores back and forth later in the ball game. However, it was Franklin’s “Black Swarm” defense that stopped Coronado’s last drive and forced a turnover on downs.

With Thursday night’s victory the Cougars have had a stranglehold on the rivalry. Yet, Coronado’s most recent efforts displayed the gap between the two schools has become just a bit tighter since coach Mike Pry’s arrival.
