Clint Holds on to Beat Ysleta 28-24

Going into their match up Friday night, the Lions were looking to rebound at home after opening their season with a loss against Hirschi (Wichita Falls). Ysleta was looking to open up the young season 2-0 for the first time since 2021. This would be the sixth meeting between both schools on the football field.

The first points of the quarter came after a Lions turnover via an interception by Ysleta defender Daniel Martinez.  A few plays later a 3yd run by Evan Martinez would out the Indians up. The point after attempt was no good and the Indians would have the first lead of the game.

The Lions would tie the game up after a long possession that was topped off by goal line touchdown by Colin Ivey. The point after attempt was no good and the game would be tied at 6-6.  Ysleta would generate a second successful drive. Martinez would find an open A.J Rodríguez on a 10yd touchdown pass. The Indians would attempt a 2pt conversion but were unsuccessful. They would lead 12-6. Ysleta would once more have an opportunity to add to their lead seconds before halftime but the stingy Clint defense held them off.

Clint would take the lead on a 20yd touchdown run by Erick Martinez. After the extra point, the Lions would lead 13-12. Ysleta would answer with a 8yd scramble by Evan Martinez to retake the lead. The Indians would not be able to convert on the 2 point play. Ysleta would go back on top 18-13.  The Lions would regain the lead once more on a 87 yard touchdown run by quarterback Daniel Ponce. After the extra point, Clint would lead 20-18. Ysleta would turn the ball over on a costly batted ball that would be returned for a 60 yard touchdown by linebacker Oliver Chavez. Clint would take a 10 point lead after the 2 point conversion. But Ysleta still held onto hope with a 83 yard kickoff return by Evan Martinez. Ysleta once again could not convert on the extra point, which would have been a game changer for the Indians. Ysleta went 0/4 on the point after attempts.

The fourth quarter would bare no points for either team and each teams defense held their opponents out of their respective end zones. The Lions would hold on to defeat the visiting Indians 28-24.

The Lions will travel to New Mexico to take on the Panthers. Ysleta looks to rebound at Bowie for their third game.
