As another high school football season is upon us, Christian Molinar takes at look at the games that will be airing live this week on EP Sports Network

Canutillo Eagles vs. Pebble Hills Spartans

Get ready for an exciting showdown at the SAC tonight at 7pm, as the Canutillo Eagles take on the Pebble Hills Spartans. The Eagles, led by Head Coach Scott Brooks, had an impressive run last year, clinching the 1-5A DII District title and reaching the regional semifinals in the playoffs. Although they bid farewell to standout players LJ Martin and Jesus Carrillo, the team boasts a strong lineup with QB Jeremy Knox and RB Rene Huerta leading the charge. With an average of 29.6 points per game on offense and a solid defense, the Eagles look promising for 2023.

On the opposing side, the Pebble Hills Spartans, under the guidance of Head Coach Mark Torres, had a remarkable season last year, securing the co-district championship in 1-6A and making it to the area finals. With QB Gael Ochoa and RB Zereian Quarrels in the spotlight, the Spartans’ offense has been potent, averaging 39.8 points per game. The defense, led by LB Dorian Jaramillo and DB Amari Welch, will be out to make a stand. The Spartans will try to repeat last year’s run.

Friday’s Game Preview: Lubbock Westerners vs. Socorro Bulldogs

Kick off your Friday with a double-header treat at the SISD SAC, starting at 4pm, as the Lubbock Westerners take on the Socorro Bulldogs. Lubbock’s Head Coach Juan Hernandez is leading a hungry team that’s looking to rebound from their performance from last year. With eight offensive starters and seven defensive starters returning, the Westerners are set to make a statement. Keep an eye on QB Ivan McGuire Jr. and RB/LB Zeke Rodriguez as they spearhead the action.

On the other side, Socorro Bulldogs, under the helm of HC Ed Cano, are aiming to turn their luck around after a challenging year. With seven starters back on offense and four on defense, they’re striving to break a losing streak. Anchoring their defense is Astin Marquez on the defensive line, while running back Diego Aguirre will be a key player to watch as he takes charge of the offense. Both teams are determined to make a statement to start the season.

To finish the night at the SAC, we have Parkland Matadors squaring off against El Dorado Aztecs.

After the first game, the action continues with the Parkland Matadors taking on the El Dorado Aztecs at 7 pm. Parkland’s Head Coach Leigh McWhorter led the team to a strong 2022 season, finishing with a record of 7-4 and making it to the bi-district finals. With a blend of returning starters and new talent, the Matadors are determined to build on their successes. Keep an eye on QB Erick Ortiz and RB Miguel Echeverria as they lead the offensive charge, while Juan Gomez and Vicente Hernandez anchor the defense.

Facing them are the El Dorado Aztecs under the guidance of HC Frank Martinez. With a focus on improvement, the Aztecs are back on the field with six offensive starters and six defensive starters. QB Elijah Issa and RB Ryan Estrada will be key players to watch as they drive the Aztecs’ offense. The defensive efforts will be bolstered by standout players like David Martinez and Deaven Medina. With both teams hungry for victory, this matchup promises to be a fitting finale to the evening.
