Rice Gives UTEP First Home Loss 73-62

The Rice Owl beat the UTEP Miners Women’s Basketball team 73-62 Saturday Afternoon at the Don Haskins Center giving the Miners their first loss at home and sweeping the Miners in Conference USA play.

The first quarter featured back and forth action by both teams but it was the Owls that would have a 22-9 lead at the end of it. In the second quarter the Miners closed the cap but Rice went on a 7-0 run towards the end of the quarter giving them a five point lead at the half.

Rice started the third quarter making 4 out of 5 shots and in with 5:21 left in it, they had a 10 point lead. The Owls would outscore the Miners 15-9 in the quarter giving them a 54-43 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Miners offense would come alive in the fourth, scoring 19 points, but the Owls also would score 19 points giving them the 11 point win.

The Miners had four players in double figures as Jazion Jackson and Elina Alike both had 11 points. N’Yah Boyd and Sabine Lipe would score 10 points.

For the Owl, the were lead by Ashlee Austin’s 15 points. Malia Fisher scored 13 and Katelyn Crosthwait scored 12 points.

With the loss the Miners are now 11-4 overall and 4-2 in C-USA play. For their next game they will host Charlotte on Monday afternoon at 1 pm.
