Strong Start Propelles UTEP to 76-58 Win Over UAB

The UTEP Miners Women’s Basketball team had a dominating first quarter that lifted them to a 76-58 win over UAB Thursday night at the Don Haskins Center.

UTEP started the game on a 11-0 run and ended the first quarter with a 24-8 lead. The Blazers made a run in the second quarter but they still trailed by 12 to the Miners at Halftime.

In the second half the Miners started the quarter just like they did in the first, by scoring 7 unanswered points and to start the fourth quarter they scored 10 points before the Blazers would score.

The Miners were lead by N’Yah Boyd’s 22 points. She was three points away from tying her career high. Jazzion Jackson scored 13 points and Elina Arike and Solay Montrose each scored 8 points. The Miners defense forced 20 turnovers in the rout of the Blazers.

For UAB, they were lead by Sara Bershers who had 11 points and Margaret Whitey who had 10 points.

With the win the Miners are now 9-2 and 2-0 in C-USA play. For their next game they will travel to take on Rice Saturday Afternoon at 1pm.
