Sun Bowl Adult Flag Football Awards $8,000 in Cash Prizes Over the Weekend

EL PASO, Texas – The Sun Bowl Association and the Southwest Flag Football League awarded $8,000 in prize money to winners of the Second Annual Sun Bowl Adult Flag Football over the weekend of August 19-21 at the Westside Sports Complex in El Paso, Texas.

The tournament had 50 teams competing in various divisions of play including a coed division, women’s division and three different men’s divisions. After 35 teams competed in the inaugural tournament, the tournament had a jump of 15 more teams than the year before which included teams from San Antonio, Texas as well as players coming in from Albuquerque, N.M., Odessa, Texas as other communities from around the region.

“It’s great to see growth from year-one to year-two of an event and we really believe that it will begin to really take off from this point forward,” said Sun Bowl Association Executive Director Bernie Olivas.  “We were able to get all games in, even with the rain that came through El Paso. Our next goal is bringing in more teams from out of town which will have a positive impact on our city and economy.”

MobTies won the Coed Division and took home $1,000 along with the Championship Belt and Championship mugs. The Vipers from El Paso, Texas became back-to-back champions in the Women’s (Competitive) Division taking home $2,500 in cash along with the belt and mugs.  Wolfpack won the Recreational Men’s Division ($1000), Regulators won the Intermediate Men’s Division ($1000) and TFFA Elite out of San Antonio won the Competitive Men’s Division ($2500).

“We received many great compliments on the organization of the tournament, and we hope that more teams from around the region and country start to take notice as we’d love to see this event grow to 100 teams and beyond,” Special Events Director Joe Daubach said.

Rosters consisted of 14 members, competed in this 8-on-8 flag football tournament. All participants received a tournament gift bag with various commemorative items.
