The El Paso Locomotive FC and the Oakland Roots SC battled to a 1-1 draw Saturday Night at Southwest University Park. The draw gave both teams a point in their first meeting of the regular season.
Oakland got on the scoreboard first when Dariusz Formella left footed a shot from the left side of the box to the high center of goal in the 13th minute.
Oakland’s lead would only last 18 minutes because in the 31st minute of the match, Locos Forward Lucho Solignac would tie the match when he scored on a right footed a shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner. He was assisted by Richie Ryan. The goal was Solignac’s first of the season.
As is turned out, that would be all the scoring for the rest of the match. The Locos had a chance to score before halftime but Aaron Gomez’s penalty kick missed. In the second half El Paso remained the more aggressive team and dominated the flow of the match but like Oakland, they wouldn’t be able to score any more goals.
Here’s what Head Coach John Hutchinson had to say after the match:
“I thought the boys put in a really good shift and put in a good game. “I’m disappointed for them that they didn’t get the win because I felt they deserved it tonight. We pick up the point, we dust ourselves off, and we go again. For me, there are really good signs tonight on both ends of the field.”
With the draw El Paso is now 1-5-1 with 4 points. They will travel to Virginia for their next match as they face Loudoun United FC from the Eastern Conference on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
