In the last game of the regular season, The UTEP Miners Women’s Basketball team lost to the North Texas Mean Green 56-47 at the Super Pit on Saturday afternoon.
The Miners were trying to play the role of spoiler as if North Texas would win they would be the Western Division champions of C-USA and they would get the double bye in the C-USA Tournament which begins on Tuesday afternoon.
Knowing this, the Mean Green had two players that had 10 points in the first quarter. Quincy Noble and Aly Gamez led North Texas to a 22-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Miners would start it on a 7-0 run and they got they lead down to one point but they were never able to take the lead as North Texas would go on a 6-0 towards the end of the quarter and they would have a 34-28 lead at halftime.
The Miners outscored the Mean Green 11-10 in the third quarter and yet again got the deficit down to one point but North Texas would find a way maintain the lead.
In the fourth quarter the Miners went on a 5-0 run thanks to the returning Destiny Thurman but that’s when North Texas turned on the defense and they limited the Miners to only scoring 8 points in the quarter giving the Mean Green a 56-47 win.
The Miners has two players in double figures, Mahri Petree and Avery Crouse. For North Texas, Aly Gamez scored a game high 20 points with 7 rebounds and Quincy Noble had 14 points with 8 rebounds.
With the win the Mean Green are the Western Division Champions of Conference USA.
With the loss the Miners end the regular season at 14-14 overall and 6-12 in C-USA.
UTEP will next be playing in the opening round of the C-USA tournament on Tuesday afternoon against UTSA. The Miners are the 6th seed and UTSA is the 7th seed. Tipoff is at 3pm form the Star in Frisco Texas and you can listen to the game on the free UTEP App with Mando Medina having the call.
