Fast Start Gives FIU 72-45 Win Over UTEP

The UTEP Miners Women’s basketball team lost their second game in a row as they lost 72-45 to the Florida International Panthers Saturday afternoon at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center in Miami Florida.

The Panthers got off to a 5-0 start to the game and they never looked back. The Miners struggled to score points and because of this FIU had a 28-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Panthers would only out score the Miners by two points but because they already had a big lead, their lead extended to 18 points at halftime.

The second half was pretty much the same as the Miners continued to struggle from the field and they would also commit 25 turnovers. FIU lead by 21 points at the end of the third quarter and they would end of winning the game by 27 points.

The Miners were lead by Katia Gallegos, who was the only Miners to have a good game. She had 23 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists for the game. Erin Wilson had 6 points for the Miners off the bench.

The 27 point lost was the biggest of the season for UTEP as they lost by 26 to Kansas earlier in the season. The Miners look to get back on the winning track as they return to El Paso and host North Texas Thursday night in the Don Haskins Center.
