Fast Start Propels UTEP over UTSA 71-59

The UTEP Miners Women’s Basketball team got a season sweep over the UTSA Roadrunners by beating them 71-59 Sunday afternoon at the Don Haskins Center.

The Miners got off to a fast start to the game as they scored 10 unanswered points. At the end of the first the Miners lead by nine points and at halftime they lead by 18 points.

The biggest lead the Miners had was 23 points in the middle of the third quarter but to UTSA’s credit they mounted a big comeback and would cut the Miners lead to 5 with only 5 minutes left in the game. But UTEP would make a couple of shots and free throws to seal their second victory over UTSA in four days.

The Miners were lead by a great performance by Destiny Thurman as she had 19 points 5 rebounds and 2 assists. UTEP would have two other players in double figures. Elina Arike had 13 points and Teal Battle had a double double as she had 15 points and 11 rebounds.

With the win the Miners are now 12-5 overall and 4-3 in C-USA play. They will play next at Florida Atlantic at 4pm on Thursday afternoon.
