Southern Miss Outlasts Miners 55-49

Playing their third game in five days, the UTEP Women’s Basketball team fell to the Southern Miss Lady Eagles 55-49 Monday afternoon in Hattiesburg Mississippi.

The Miners struggled from the field as they only shot 27 percent for the game, Southern Miss shot 45 percent from the field. 

Even though the Miners struggled from the field, they were still in the game with 2 minutes left to go as they the cut Lady Eagles lead to 2. But Southern Miss was able to pull away after Kelsey Jones scored a bucket and then they made their free throws when the Miners had to foul.

Jones ended up the leading scorer for Southern Miss as she had 16 points off the bench and she was the reason the the Lady Eagles got 24 points off the bench. The Miners only had 8 points off the bench. 

Southern Miss also used their size to their advantage as they out scored the Miners 32-14 in the paint. The Miners never lead in the game, they were able to tie it four times but the Lady Eagles never gave up the lead.

For the Miners, they had two players in double figures as Katia Gallegos and the returning Elina Arike had 11 points. Destiny Thurman scored 7 points and both Avery Crouse and Teal Battle scored 6 points each.

The Miners will play their fourth game in seven days a they travel to San Antonio on Thursday night. You can listen to the game on the Free UTEP App, tipoff is at 6 p.m.
