Strong 4th Quarter Gives Charlotte 71-59 Win Over Miners

A big fourth quarter performance by the Charlotte 49ers propelled them to a 71-59 victory over the UTEP Miners Women’s Basketball team Thursday Night at the Don Haskins Center.

The Miners were playing their first game in 12 days as they had to postpone two games due to Covid, for the 49ers, this was their first game since December 22.

For the most part the game was very competitive as both team exchanged leads. At halftime the 49ers were only up by one point and in the third, the Miners had the lead.

Going into the fourth quarter the Miners lead 53-49 but in the fourth, that’s when the 49ers took over the game. Led by Octavia Jett-Wilson, they outscored UTEP 22-6.

Jett Wilson finished the game with a game high 24 points. Charlotte had three other players in double figures as Jada McMillian had 16, Molina Williams and Mikayla Boykins both scored 11 points.

Utep was lead in scoring by Teal Battle’s 14 points. Destiny Thurman was the only other Miner to score in double figures, she had 12 points.

The Miners 9-4 (1-2) will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Old Dominion at 1 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center. You can hear the game on the free UTEP App or watch the game on C-USA TV. Mando Medina will have the call for both.
