Big Fourth Quarter Keeps Miners Undefeated

The UTEP Women’s Basketball team remained undefeated as they beat Seattle University 62-57 at the South Point Thanksgiving Shoot Out in Las Vegas.

The Miners were short handed in this game as starters Avery Crouse and Elina Arike didn’t play along with Mahri Peatree and Adhel Tac. But the Miners still found a way to win this game.

The game was close through out the entire game as Seattle only had a 2 point lead at the end of the third period. But in there fourth, the Miners outscored the Redhawks 18-11 and their defense forced three turnovers in the last 1:14 that secured another win for UTEP.

The Miners were lead by Destiny Thurman as she had 16 points, Teal Battle and Eliana Cabral each scored 12 points with Katia Gallegos and Brenda Fontana scoring 6 points.

“I love the toughness and resolve of this team,” UTEP head coach Kevin Baker said. “We didn’t play well and shot the ball horribly. But they just kept fighting. We out rebounded them and got steals. Finally we hit shots in the fourth quarter to pull away. I am so proud of their fight tonight.”

The Miners will play again tomorrow at 7 p.m. as they face off against the Kansas Jayhawks in their second and finally game of the South Point Thanksgiving Shoot out.
