The El Paso Locomotive FC won the Copa Tejas on Wednesday night when they had a 3-3 draw against San Antonio FC at Southwest University Park.
To say that this match was a tale of two halves is an understatement. San Antonio dominated the first half as they put on great offensive pressure on the Locos which led to two scores for San Antonio.
The first goal was scored 10 minutes into the match by Justin Dhillon and the second one was scored by Mathieu Deplange in the 27th minute.
So with the Locos down 2-0 at halftime, the crowd at Southwest University Park was wondering how the team would respond. And the answer to that question is that the Locomotive would themselves dominate the second half and put on a display of great offensive play.
The Locos finally got on the board when Macca King scored on a header in the 57th minute. Then Nick Ross tied the match when we scored in the 73rd minute. Diego Luna decided to get in on the action as he scored a goal in the 85th minute that gave the Locos their first lead of the match.
The way the El Paso was dominating the second half it seemed that they would earn themselves three points along with the Copa Tejas, but with one minute left to go in extra play, Kortne Ford would score on a header that tied the game 3-3.
That would be the final score of the match but because the Locos earned a point that was enough to make then the new Copa Tejas Champions.
Here’s what head coach Mark Lowry had to say after the match:
“The guys were great in the second half, they had resiliency and character. You can’t fault them at all. The guys we have available were absolutely superb.”
Win the draw El Paso is now 14-2-10, 52 points. They have eliminated Austin Bold FC from contention. Their next match will be on Saturday when they go on the road to play FC Tulsa.
