A struggling Coronado Thunderbirds team finally got their first win of the season as they beat the Socorro Bulldogs 14-0 on Friday night.
Coronado came in today’s district game with no wins while Socorro has one win. Coronado had only 14points in this young season until tonight. Socorro had over 1,000 yards in the season. It looked like Socorro could win their second game. Looks can be deceiving.
In the second quarter, Coronado scored first with a 20-yard run by Ricky Lozoya and the extra point was good. That was all the scoring in the first half.
In the third quarter, Coronado scored the second time with a 6-yard run by Cade Little and the extra point was good. The final score was Coronado 14 and Socorro 0.
Many mistakes by Socorro really hurt the Bulldogs. They had three fumble snaps that lost over 25 yards.A mistake on special teams by Socorro placed Coronado in a great position to score their second touchdown.
Grades and injuries have really hurt Coronado. Their starting QB is out for the season and they are using 3 Sophomores to fill the QB role. One Coronado official stated that their Freshman and JV teams has
combined and all Sophomores are playing on varsity. This could hurt them years to come. We will haveto see how they recover from injuries and grades.
Coronado finished the night with 179 yards on offense and Socorro finished with a total of 41 yards.
With the fumbles and three personal fouls on Socorro, they truly beat their self.
Coronado plays Montwood at Montwood next week and Socorro play Americas at home next week.
