The UTEP Miners Soccer team opened up Conference USA play with a close match against the 20th ranked Rice Owls Thursday night at University Field.
UTEP scored first when freshman Molly Sutherland had her first collegiate goal at the eleven minutes into the match.
Rice would then regroup to scored twice in a 14-minute span with goals from Caleigh Boeckx (14’) and Ziyana Samanani (27’) to pull ahead.
Both defenses then locked down, with only two combined shots on goal in the second half as the nationally-ranked Owls escaped with the 2-1 victory.
With the loss the Miners are 2-6, 0-1 C-USA while the Owls are 7-1-1, 1-0 C-USA.
The Miners will wrap up the opening week of league action Sunday at North Texas at 12 p.m. MT
