Chapin Dominates Coronado 39-7

Going into tonight’s game, the Chapin Huskies and Coronado Thunderbirds each sought out their first victory of this young season.

The Huskies started the first half strong and their rout began with an 8-yard TD pass from Mason Standerfer to Zeke Pastran to make it 6-0, Chapin, with 7:38 left in the 1st quarter.

The next Husky score came with less than 30 seconds into the second quarter as Mason Standerfer found Hunter Standerfer for a 16-yard TD pass to put the Huskies up 13-0. The T-Birds were able to manage to get the ball downfield into Husky territory, but the Chapin defense held strong by shutting down any Coronado attempt to get points on the board in the first half.

The final score of the first half came when Chapin’s Jacob Williamson found paydirt with a 5-yard TD run to make it a 20-0 Chapin halftime lead.

The Chapin dominance continued in the 2nd half, as the Huskies came out into the 3rd quarter with a 59-yard TD pass from Standerfer to Brent Hallman.

On the ensuing drive, the T-Birds muffed a snap when they were going to punt the ball and that was recovered by the Huskies at the T-Bird 3-yard line. On the very next play, Chapin’s Maurice Jenkins walked into the end zone with a 3-yard TD run to make it 32-0, Chapin, with 6:26 left in the 3rd quarter.

The last score of the game and only one for Coronado came with 2:17 left with a 19-yard Cade Little TD run.

The T-Birds put in 3 different quarterbacks – Blake Randag, Jack Bumgardner and Owen Levesque – throughout the game to try and turn things around, but the Husky defense had an answer for anything Coronado tried, as the Huskies came out victorious, 39-7.

Next week, the Chapin Huskies (1-1) will host the Canutillo Eagles. While the T-Birds (0-2) will try and get their first win of the season as they will travel to Carlsbad next week to take on the Cavemen.
