In one of the most anticipated season openers, the Canutillo Eagles held off the Burges Mustang 29-22 on Friday night.
Canutillo started fast building a 13-0 lead in the first quarter. In the second quarter Burges scored a touchdown but so did Canutillo so the score at halftime was 22-7 in favor of Canutillo.
The Eagles added another touchdown in the third quarter, making the score 29-7.
So with a 22 point lead at the start of the fourth quarter, it looked like the Eagles would cruise to victory, but that’s when Burges came alive and score 15 points in the qt to make it 29-22.
The momentum was in the Mustang’s favor but the Ealges defense held strong and stopped Burges on fourth down with 2 minutes left in the game and that play gave them the victory.
