EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP soccer team will play its first and only exhibition game on the docket when it squares off at former Conference USA affiliate Colorado College at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The contest will help the Miners, who opened training camp on Aug. 4, fine-tune things in preparation for their 2021 season opener at Texas Tech on Aug. 19.
“We are excited to hit the road for our exhibition game against former C-USA opponent Colorado College,” UTEP head coach Kathryn Balogun said. “They are a quality program who will challenge us prior to the start of our season at Texas Tech. Both of our programs came off a tough year and are looking to make a statement in 2021.”
The game will afford Balogun and her staff a chance to tinker with line-ups and combinations against a team familiar to Miner soccer faithful. The Orange and Blue and Colorado College squared off 12 times from 2006 through 2013, with UTEP holding a 7-5 edge in the series. Tuesday’s contest won’t count in the standings, but expect intense play from both squads with it being a chance to secure some momentum and confidence heading toward the regular season.
The Miners returned 23 players from last year’s team (3-6-2, 2-3-1) that came within a point of qualifying for the C-USA tournament. UTEP also added six newcomers, each of whom is expected to press for playing time.
UTEP will open the regular season by playing against Texas Tech for the first time since 2009. The home opener is set for 1 p.m. on Aug. 22 against Abilene Christian.
